Connecticut weekend getaways are easiest when you start from Greenwich: Mystic, Litchfield, and the coast are all close enough for a real Friday-to-Sunday reset. You do not need a flight. You need a packed car before I-95 clogs.
After five years here, the trips that actually happen are the ones under three hours. Anything longer becomes a negotiation with school sports and the dog. The list below is the short version I give clients who just moved and want to feel like they live in New England, not a suburb of Grand Central. Pick one base. r/Connecticut will tell you the same thing: Litchfield Hills and Mystic are different weekends. Stacking both is a car commercial, not a getaway.

Litchfield Hills
This is the connecticut weekend getaway Greenwich people book on repeat. Greenwich Moms and local innkeepers treat it as a 90-minute staycation: hiking, farm ice cream, antiques, and inns that feel like you left the state. You did not. You drove to Washington Depot.
Where I send couples
About 1.5 hours · book 4–8 weeks out in October
Mayflower Inn & Spa in Washington, Belden House in Litchfield, Winvian Farm (the treehouse cottage is the one people screenshot), Lost Fox Inn, and The Abner in the old courthouse. A Saturday that actually works: sandwiches from Arethusa a Mano, picnic and trails at White Memorial, dinner at Lost Fox or Arethusa al Tavolo. White Horse Tavern in New Preston needs a reservation. Kids get Arethusa ice cream in Bantam whether you planned it or not.
Hikes locals actually name: Steep Rock in Washington, Kent Falls (parking is a sport in October), White Memorial. New Milford green if you want shops without the inn bill. Do not also drive to Mystic.
Mystic
Two hours, one drawbridge, and a seaport that occupies children for a full day. Do not try Mystic as a day trip from Greenwich unless you love sitting in I-95. Sleep there, walk the village at night, drive home Sunday after breakfast. Locals will tell you Mystic is rammed on peak weekends. If you can shift to a Thursday night, do it.
Seaport weekend
About 2 hours · aquarium + seaport
Mystic Seaport Museum and Mystic Aquarium are the anchors. The village is small. One good dinner reservation is enough. If you still have energy Monday, Newport is another hour east, but that turns this into a three-night trip.
Newport, Rhode Island
Technically not Connecticut. Everyone still files it under connecticut weekend getaways because the drive is the same I-95 crawl. Cliff Walk in the morning, harbor in the evening. A day trip from Greenwich means you miss the quiet version of the town.
Stay overnight or skip it
About 2.5 hours · mansions + harbor
Do Cliff Walk first, before parking gets ugly. Book a harbor hotel if you want to walk to dinner. July and August need months of lead time.
Essex and the river towns
The sleeper pick. Griswold Inn, river cruise energy, no seaport crowds. If you have one free Saturday and a sitter, this is the low-effort connecticut weekend getaway.
One night on the river
About 1 hour · Griswold Inn energy
Park once. Walk. Eat. If you still want water without Mystic parking, this is the move. Gillette Castle plus the Chester ferry is the scenic add-on, not a second destination.
When to go
April–May
Lower rates, some coastal spots still quiet. Good for inns.
June–August
Book beaches and Newport early. Litchfield is easier.
Mid–late October
Foliage. Kent Falls parking is a sport. Leave Friday morning.

Can I do these as day trips?
Essex, yes. Litchfield, maybe. Mystic and Newport, no. You will spend the weekend in the car and call it a getaway anyway.
Do I need a car?
Yes. Metro-North will not drop you at Kent Falls.
